Objectives of the Department
In order to strengthen the rural economy and create employment opportunities, the main objective of the department during the Fourth Agriculture Roadmap is to:
- Establish sugarcane-based industries in the state.
- Increase sugarcane cultivation, production, productivity, and sugar recovery.
Current Status
At present, a total of 9 sugar mills are operational in Bihar, primarily located in West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, and Samastipur. Most of the currently working sugar mills have increased their crushing capacity. The total crushing capacity of all the mills is 62,950 TCD.
Initiatives and Programs
The Sugarcane Industries Department is implementing the “Mukyamantri Ganna Vikas Yojna” to:
- Ensure the availability of high-yielding varieties of seeds through a seed production chain.
- Supply certified seeds at subsidized rates to sugarcane farmers.
- Provide plant protection chemicals at subsidized rates.
- Promote intercropping and production of sugarcane seedlings using the Bud Chip/Single Bud method.
- Organize training programs to encourage farmers to adopt modern cultivation techniques.
Additionally, under the “Bihar State Jaggery Industry Promotion Programme”, the department aims to:
- Enhance farmers' income through better processing of produce.
- Create an enabling environment for setting up industries in the sugarcane sector.
